Example #1
We need to reduce our total transportation costs in the Midwest region of North America by more effectively planning both loads and routes with our internal and third-party fleets. In the past year, we averaged 15 pallets per truck load. While trucks can theoretically hold up to 26 pallets, we weigh out at 21 pallets, meaning that our trucks are operating with significant spare capacity that, if utilized, could reduce our costs significantly. There may also be an opportunity to more effectively optimize route planning, resulting in less miles traveled, again reducing costs. In addition, driver retention has been an ongoing problem, and exit surveys have indicated the endpoints of our routes being more than 100 miles away from each driver’s home origin is a major cause. We believe that more efficient route planning could reduce this issue, lower total mileage, and have a positive impact on driver retention.
Example #2
During harvest season, we employ more than 5,000 temporary workers per week, and the combined labor and transportation costs are one of largest factors in our supply chain. The process of determining which workers will be assigned to which farm location, which workers are assigned to pick certain crops, and how to manage the workers' transportation from more than 750 standard locations takes our planning team of four people nearly three days per week. If we could find a more efficient way to match the appropriate workers to the relevant crop, with the right skills, and with the minimum transportation needs, we could make a significant positive impact on our total costs. This would also free up time for the planning team to focus on mid and long-range planning assignments for additional strategic value.
