How do I create a Challenge Definition without using a template?

Updated over a year ago

If you don't see a Use Case Template that fits your challenge, that's okay! You can take a template and customize it to your needs, but you can also make your challenge from scratch.

First, make sure you are familiar with some best practices from the Use Case Templates. Next, follow the steps below to create your own Challenge Definition:

  1. Create a new Challenge Definition as normal, using the "+ Create new Challenge Definition" in the Challenge Modeler tool.

  2. Navigate to the Use Case Card, by clicking on the Use Case circle in the left sidebar or by clicking the forward arrows at the bottom of the left sidebar.

  3. Click the "Build Your Own" button below the carousel of Use Case Templates (if you ever want to reverse this decision, you can click the back arrow at the bottom of the Use Case Card to return to the carousel of use cases).

  4. Navigate to any of the next seven cards (Scale, Current Approach, Impact, Goals & Metrics, Levers, Constraints, or Desired Outputs) by clicking on the circle in the left sidebar table of contents or by using the arrow buttons.

  5. For Scale, Current Approach, and Impact you will see a blank card with a plus button to add paragraphs or sentences. Click the plus button, select whether you are entering paragraphs or sentences, decide where you want this sentence goes (or you can drag and drop after adding), and hit enter to add it to the card.

  6. To add paragraph sub-headings, insert a paragraph and before hitting enter make sure that the "Sub-heading" box is checked on the right side. Unchecking the sub-heading box will instead create a paragraph break or line space that has no text.

  7. Add as many paragraphs and sentences as you would like, and you can remove any you no longer want by clicking the trash can icon on the right side.

  8. Rearrange the rows by dragging and dropping the three dot icons for each row.

  9. When finished with a card, click the "Completed" button to preview the Knowpars that you've created for each card.

  10. For the Definition cards (Goals & Metrics, Levers, Constraints, Desired Outputs) simply use the + icon on the card to add new rows to the table and enter your desired values. You can reorder the items on the Goal & Metrics, Levers, and Desired Outputs cards by change the priority numbers for each row. When finished, make sure to click the "Completed" button for each card.

  11. Add any Plans & Questions or Notes & Attachments as you wish to augment your Challenge Definition document.

  12. Navigate to the Preview Card to select the parameters for how you'd like to publish your Challenge Definition document, and then click the "Publish" button at the bottom when you are ready to finalize it.

  13. Congratulations! You have now created a Challenge Definition without using a template and you can share this document with others or even the SWARM team in the Share Card!
